Genetic research can have a huge impact medicine as we know it. Every day scientists get a little bit closer to finding a treatment for some of the worst genetic diseases there are. There are multiple ways that they can go about treating or even curing a certain condition in a person, including deleting the gene that is causing it, altering the process it uses to develop the disease in a person, or create a medicine that can help to treat it. Whatever the solution is, it typically takes a lot of time and research before a viable solution becomes available to those who have this condition. There are constantly new developments being made in medicine with the help of genetic research, and it is considered to be one of the most useful weapons in the fight against these diseases.
The use of genetic research to cure or treat certain diseases brings up a lot of questions, some of them ethical. Who or what do we test these theories on and who has access to the treatments after they are deemed viable? In the course of doing genetic research, many of these questions and concerns arise. Many scientists believe that the ends almost always justify the means when it comes to finding treatments for deadly genetic diseases.
Couples who have trouble conceiving are often referred to what is called a genetic counselor. This is someone who gives couples advice on how they can go about getting pregnant and the risks that are involved in doing so. Typically couples who have problems with getting pregnant pass down certain conditions or diseases to their children, which is why it is so important to understand all of the risks involved in having a child in this situation. These people are encouraged to think hard about having a child because of these risks and how they will affect the child.
For years scientists have been studying how to eliminate specific genetic diseases before a child is even born. While still in utero it is possible to delete or modify certain genes so as to decrease or completely eliminate the possibility of the disease developing after birth. Although it is still something that is not completely a viable option for parents, it is something that shows promise for the future and is constantly being studied and explored.
Genetic research can be used for a number of things though, from helping to prevent conditions like Huntington's in people to creating special hybrid plants that are resistant to dangerous pesticides. This sort of research is changing the world as we know it each day, sometimes in controversial ways that not everyone agrees with. Altering the natural order of things is something that will not sit right with everyone, but these discoveries are being made every single day regardless, sometimes with amazing results which could mean great things for people who are in need of a cure for a certain disease. By simply analyzing a small DNA sample, a scientist is able to find out incredible things about a person and disease control.
